I’ve been involved in Jazz & Acoustic music promotion in Bristol for over 32 years, now a freelance promoter of Jazz & Acoustic music under the banner ‘Jazz@ the Albert’

I ran my own Pub/Venue, The Albert in Bristol for 26 years (1979-2005). Establishing it as a renowned bar and music venue specialising in Jazz (Jazz at The Albert) and with my partner Lorraine Carpenter~ Acoustic Roots music (“The Albert Hole” Folk & Roots Acoustic Club).

The Albert also played hosts to artists who were touring as part of the Arts Council of England, South West Jazz, Contemporary Music Network, Serious Productions Ltd and in association with Jed Williams of the Brecon Jazz Festival. I also commissioned two original contemporary compositions with assistance from South West Arts:

Awards and featured publications:

‘Highly recommended Venue’ (European musicians ensemble association)

10th in ‘The 50 best music venues in the country’ guide (Independent on Sunday)

Top five in ‘best music pubs guide’ (Roger Prost)

‘A Building a better Bristol’ award from Bristol Chamber of Commerce:

“In recognition of a valuable contribution to enhancing the City for the benefit of all who visit, live and work in Bristol”.

Awarded Best jazz venue 1996 and 1998 by the musicians themselves through Jazz Services (Arts Council of England).

In all I’ve overseen and organised over 2,800 events in a variety of settings, some established venues, some just spaces which I transformed to create a concert evening.

I have also been involved in broadcasting on TV and Radio. including a seven x 1 hour series of “Live at the Albert” sessions for HTV. A series of 1/2 hour programmes over 5 years (fortnightly) called “The Giants of Jazz” on BBC Radio Bristol as part of the Keith Warmington show.  Also selected one-off events for BBC Radio 2, including a live New Years day broadcast with Humphrey Littleton/Acker Bilk.  A recorded session with Russian trumpeter Valeri Ponamarov with the Clark Tracey Quartet and a specialist piece live at the Bath International Music festival.

Following 2005 when we were forced to leave the Albert, I became beverages manager at Bordeaux Quay Eco-Restaurant on the Bristol Docks helping my friend and Eco-restaurateur Barney Haughton, get it up and running. I also promoted music there over 20 gigs in 3 years. In 2009 I was asked to join Future Inns hotels to establish a Jazz Club venue at their new Bristol hotel in Cabot Circus. During the 18 months there, promoting and producing over 135 events, both jazz & acoustic.

I have over 30 years experience in the Licensed trade and have extensive knowledge and qualifications of Wine and Cocktails. Winner of many cocktail competitions and having came second in the UK Bartenders Comp’ 2005, went on to represent the UK at the International Bartenders Guild seminar and Competition in Bordeaux in Sept’ 2005.

Management; Ian Storror has undertaken some management for a few artists, performing the service of agent for booking and contractual work, publicity, production and promotion. Jonathan Gee in London, Jim Blomfield from Bristol.

Jazz Talks; Jazz@ the Albert is able to provide in-depth talks on jazz musicians from the past, using an entertaining format with audio~visual aspects to support the talk. Based on a BBC Radio Bristol series by Ian Storror, it was broadcast ‘live’ over many years from 1998, in association with the BBC’s Keith Warmington, on his ‘drive-time’ and late shows. “The Giants of Jazz” series covered the life, the times, and the music of a diverse range of artists from Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald to Ornette Coleman and Medeski, Martin & Wood. Currently I have Ella Fitzgerald up and running and hoping to have a list of 12 (by June 2012) to choose from including: Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Frank Sinatra, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Goodman…etc.

I also have a great passion for Football and most sports, Jazz, Food & Drink of high quality and I’m an avid crossword solver (The Guardian is the best!).
